Our student leaders at St Mary’s College had the opportunity to attend the National Young Leaders Day, presented by Halogen, at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. This event is Australia’s largest gathering of young leaders and it provides students with a unique opportunity to hear some of Australia’s most high profile people share their insights from their own leadership journeys.
This year, the students were able to hear from guest speakers in the areas of the arts, exploration and sports. This included Guy Edmonds (Director and Actor of Hardball), Lachie Smart (Youngest pilot to fly solo around the world) and Cate Campbell (Australian Olympic swimmer and gold medalist).
The students talk about their highlights from the day below:
‘As a leader, being able to get back up and be flexible is something really important.’ - Mykaela
‘She [Cate] taught us how to manage things when things get hard. She was confident, and she believed in herself. Leadership for her was what you can show to people, face reality, accept yourself for who you are and act real in front of people. Don’t let people ruin your dream and just show them what you can do.’ - Bakhtawar
‘I find him [Lachie] inspiring because of his persistence, when things would not go his way, he would continue to persevere through the obstacle. Lachie would also learn from his mistakes, which would eventually end up saving his life. I feel that we, as students from St Mary’s, can apply this mindset into our lives.’ - Janith
‘Cate Campbell was one of the guest speakers and I was very inspired by her speech. I was very fortunate to be able to attend this excursion, and learnt to be a better leader.’ - Myisha
