Principal's Message

Welcome to the Term 1, 2025 St Mary's College Newsletter...

Whilst we have well and truly settled into the new school year, I would still like to take this opportunity to welcome new students and families to our school community. We look forward to being on this educational journey with you. Joining us in this are several amazing new members of staff whom you will have either met already or can read about in our Staff page. Positive relationships between students, families and staff continue to be a strong feature of our school and we are fortunate to be able to continue this tradition with the new teaching and educational support staff who have joined us at each campus.

Opening assembly

Our Opening Assembly was a warmer day than expected but still highly enjoyable and a great opportunity to recoginse our award winners, acknowledge our student campus leaders and build connections with other students who are deaf or hard of hearing. We rotate the campus hosting the event each year to allow parents and carers from various areas across Melbourne an opportunity to attend. I would like to thank Mr Tim Newcomb and the Marymede Catholic College school community for hosting our assembly this year. The warm welcome and last-minute changes they made to accommodate for the hot and windy weather was very much appreciated.

Wantirna South Building Refurbishment

We are extremely excited to announce that St Mary’s College has been allocated an Australian Government Capital Grant of $2.4 million to refurbish the multipurpose and general learning spaces at the Wantirna South Primary Campus. With a local contribution of $1 million, we are eagerly looking forward to commencing design on the tailor-made, vibrant and playful learning environments our students will enjoy.

School Improvement Plan

In response to the highly positive findings of our 2024 review, a new 4-year plan has been set which paves the way for continuing our great work in improving outcomes for students. Our 3 priorities are:

• A teaching approach that follows the Vision for Instruction with researched-based adjustments for deaf and hard of hearing students

• Staff with knowledge and skill to meet the needs of our Deaf and Hard of Hearing plus students

• Visible and strong connections to families, partner schools and our Catholic identity

Having so many staff with specialist qualifications and skill within our school, 23 Teachers of the Deaf, 2 Speech Language Pathologists and 3 Educational Interpreters, has enabled us to ensure the focus of our goals will have a positive impact on every student within our community.

As we move into the final weeks of Lent and start to think about Easter and the coming holidays, I would like to wish everyone a bright and joyous Easter and safe Term 1 holiday. Please enjoy this edition of our College newsletter.

Staff movements

We are delighted to welcome 5 new staff this year - Amy Kettle (Teacher of the deaf) to our Sunbury campus, Kylie Kovac (Teacher of the deaf) to our Ringwood campus, Ashleigh King (Teacher) to our South Morang campus, Nicole Smith (Teacher) and Ebonnie Toscano (Education Support) to our Wantirna South campus.

Three staff members are leaving us this term. Sonya Azuma (Educational Support at Wantirna South) is retiring to travel with her husband, Christina Stassinis (Teacher of the deaf at Ringwood) is moving to take up a leadership position at Trinity Grammar School and Gavin Doyle-Bates (Education Interpreter at Ringwood) is pursuing other interpreting opportunities. We thank them for their service to the school and wish them well.

Congratulations!

We congratulate Bridie Stevens who has qualified with a Master of Teaching and Eve Asquith who has qualified with a Master of Speech Pathology. Well done on achieving this after many years of hard work.

Staff Professional Learning

Our staff have had two opportunities to learn together this term.

At the start of the year we heard from Laura Spencer who guided staff through how to employ strategies to assist with anxiety and build resilience in our students. Many staff learnt something about their own triggers and glimmers which can assist in how we manage day to day events.

Midway through the term we shared a day with Dan Petro. He focused on evidence based practices that can be immediately implemented in the classroom for both typical students and students displaying behaviours of concern.

Both of these learning days link to our School Improvement Plan, specifically in the area of building staff capacity to support the wellbeing of students with additional needs.

Graduate Staff Mass

Our two graduate teachers, Bridie Stevens and Ashleigh King attended the annual Graduate Teacher Mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral with our Principal, Amanda Purcell. This event welcomes staff new to the teaching profession as part of their introduction to working in Catholic Education prior to attending a day of induction activities.

Term 1 Update

The student leaders at St Mary’s College for the deaf have worked diligently to create strong connections with their peers, lead the school in prayer during the opening assembly and participate in a leadership excursion this term.

Throughout the year, Jack, Thomas, Marlan, Zach, Arden and Luis will represent their campus in various ways. They will organise social events, deliver speeches at assemblies and coordinate fundraising initiatives to support our community. Their focus will be on promoting student voice and agency, empowering their fellow students to take an active role in the life of the school. We look forward to seeing what our student leaders implement throughout the year.

Opening Assembly

On Thursday 13th February, our South Morang Campus hosted the St Mary’s College for the deaf opening assembly. It was a special occasion where staff and students gathered to formally welcome the student leaders of 2024. During the assembly Luis, Zach, Arden, Thomas, Marlan and Jack led the school in prayer, setting a positive and inspiring tone for the year ahead.

National Young Leaders Day

On Monday 3rd March, our student leaders attended the National Young Leaders Day at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. This event provided them with a unique opportunity to hear from some of Australia’s most influential leaders, including Emma McKeon, Thomas Duncan-Watt and Catherine Laga’aia, who shared valuable insights from their own leadership journeys. The experience left our student leaders feeling inspired and motivated as they embark on their own leadership journey.

Swimming Program

This term, our Year 3 students were involved in their swimming program, focusing on important water safety and survival skills.

The lessons were designed to help students gain confidence in the water by practicing safe entry techniques, learning how to tread water for 10 seconds, and completing a safety circle in the water.

It's an exciting and valuable opportunity for the children to build essential skills in a controlled and safe environment. We're excited to see their progress as they become more confident and capable swimmers!

Student Representative Council

Congratulations to Marcus who has been elected to be the Student Representative Council member in 3/4 Blue for 2025. Marcus wrote a speech which he shared with his class and was voted to be part of the Holy Trinity and St Mary’s SRC this year.

Marcus will attend meetings throughout each term representing his year level where he will be able to express their ideas, listen to the concerns of other students, and play an active role in helping improve our school. This role not only gives students a voice but also encourages responsibility, leadership, and teamwork. Well done Marcus on this achievement.

TORCH Award

Reggie was awarded the TORCH Award at our Holy Trinity and St Mary’s assembly for displaying the value of CONFIDENCE.

Reggie has begun to confidently walk independently into her classroom and eagerly greets her teachers each morning. Reggie is very proud of herself, as are her teachers.

Social Skills

Starting a new school year can be challenging when it comes to making friends and building social connections. At St. Mary's, students benefit from playing alongside and observing their hearing peers during playtime.

With the guidance of Teachers of the Deaf, St Mary’s students are encouraged to advocate for themselves, listen actively, resolve conflicts, and build friendships. This fosters resilience and provides valuable opportunities to practice learned social skills in a supportive environment.

Holy Trinity and St Mary’s Athletics Day

St Mary’s students in Years 3-6 recently attended the Holy Trinity and St Mary’s athletics day held at the Bill Stewart Athletics track in Vermont South. Our students showed outstanding determination and spirit across all events, including the high jump, long jump, sprints, shot put, discus, and hurdles.

It was a fantastic day filled with fun, friendly competition, and plenty of cheering. Congratulations to all our athletes for their good sportspersonship and house spirit – you made us proud! A big thank you to our teachers, parents, and everyone who supported the event.

English at St Mary’s

Students have thrived in the English at St Mary’s program. This tailored program follows the Victorian Curriculum, delivered by a Teacher of the Deaf, provides adjustments suited for DHH students and moves at a pace that is both engaging and challenging.

Chill Out Space

Students are enjoying our new Chill Out space at our Wantirna South campus!

This welcoming area gives students the opportunity to rest, recharge, or reconnect throughout the day -supporting their wellbeing and helping them stay focused and ready to learn.

Harmony Day

On March 28th, St Mary's College for the Deaf, Wantirna South campus, celebrated Harmony Day. This is a day to embrace our cultural diversity and promote inclusivity, respect, and a sense of belonging for all.

We encouraged students to wear orange or attire representing their family's culture to show their support. Our year 3/4 students participated in numerous activities including craft and flag making followed by a whole school parade and dance off.

Extended Numeracy Learning

During the term, the 5/6 students' numeracy goal has been learning about decimals to tenths and hundredths. Students worked with concrete materials (e.g. fun-size chocolate) to make decimal numbers. The packet of ten represents a whole, and the ten fun-size chocolates represent tenths.

We then experimented with making hundredths by cutting one fun-size chocolate into ten equal pieces. This was a visual representation for students to model that hundredths is a smaller unit when compared to tenths.

Year 6 Camp

Our Year 6 students had a fantastic time at Lord Somers Camp! They were welcomed at the camp’s Amphitheatre, which became the central meeting point, where staff entertained the students before they took part in a variety of fun activities over the three days, including kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, initiative games, screen printing, and raft building.

The weather was perfect for outdoor fun on the beach. Our students had access to the Roger touchscreen microphone and their AB waterproof protective battery, which helped them hear more clearly while enjoying their water activities.

Our Year 7 camp was held at Campaspe Downs. It was a great opportunity to meet new people and make friends as our students transitioned into highschool. The excitement began in the sports hall, where students eagerly waited to find out which cabin they would be in. From there, the adventure kicked off with thrilling challenges that tested courage and teamwork. Many conquered their fear of heights as they took on rock climbing, abseiling, possum gliding, and the Leap of Faith. They also sharpened their aim in archery and explored the outdoors through orienteering. With plenty of laughter, teamwork, and unforgettable moments, it was an action-packed experience that pushed everyone to step outside their comfort zones and support one another!

St Mary's Alumni News

This term we caught up with 2022 St Mary's Graduate, Mykaela...

Every now and then, we have the privilege of catching up with our graduates, and we’re always thrilled to hear about their journeys beyond St Mary’s College.

This term, we were lucky enough to reconnect with Mykaela Briggs and hear all about her exciting travels and experiences overseas!

I just came back to Australia a month ago from my international winter school in Seoul. I was in Korea from mid January to early March being a student at Hanyang University. It was so cold but I had so much fun, I might go back again this year.

Mykaela

I did lots of things while I was in Korea. On our last day of classes, my dance teacher brought his favourite childhood korean snacks to class for us to try and took all of us out for Dakgalbi (chopped chicken is marinated in a mix of spicy Korean sauce then stir fried with rice cakes, sweet potatoes, green cabbage, and perilla leaves).

I also got to go to many kpop concerts while in Korea! I got to see artists like Taeyang, Taecyeon and more! My favourite has to be when I finally got to see my friend perform live. A friend of mine debuted in a kpop group in 2023! I haven’t seen/talked to him since he debuted. So, it was really special for me to see him perform live.

I also recently finished my Associate Degree in Screen and Media Production and will be going into the bachelor's later this year. Last year I did the TOPIK test (Test of Proficiency in Korean) and passed level 2!!! It means my Korean is around the level of an early elementary school student. I am planning to take the test again this year or next year. Hoping I get level 4 next (equivalent to a middle school student, a.k.a around 12–14 years old.)

At the moment, I got the semester off. I am planning to use this time to focus on my Korean so I can get to level 4 before the test this year (which is normally around October). Hanyang also has an online summer school, so I might join as soon as I can do it from home.
